Understanding Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda?

If you’ve heard the word Ayurveda but aren’t quite sure what it means, you’re not alone. And you don’t need to know your dosha, understand Sanskrit, change your diet, or overhaul your lifestyle to experience it. At MEND, we make Ayurveda make sense. Ayurveda is an ancient system of whole-person wellness that originated in India thousands of years ago. At its heart is a surprisingly modern idea: There is no one-size-fits-all way to feel well. Ayurveda looks at you as a whole—your digestion, sleep, energy, stress, nutrition, daily habits, environment, emotional wellbeing, and the patterns that make your body unique. These patterns are traditionally understood through three mind-body constitutions called doshas: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. But you don’t need to know yours before you walk through our doors. That’s our job.

Think of Ayurveda as learning your body’s language.

Why do some foods leave you feeling incredible while others don’t? Why can one person thrive on an intense morning workout while another feels completely depleted? Why does stress show up in your stomach while someone else feels it in their sleep? Ayurveda begins by paying attention to these patterns—and asking a simple question: What does your body need? Your answer may look completely different from someone else’s. That’s the point.

You might try Shirodhara, where a continuous stream of warm oil creates an incredibly meditative relaxation experience.

You may learn about your dosha and begin to understand why certain routines work beautifully for you while others never have.
